Japan E. coli O111 Outbreak

A widespread E. coli O111 outbreak in Japan was traced to Yukhoe served at a chain of restaurants.

Outbreak News

The low-priced Korean-style barbecue chain, Yakiniku-zakaya Ebisu, was identified as the source of an E. coli O111 outbreak among Japanese residents in mid-April 2011.  At least 90 people became ill with E. coli O111 infections during the outbreak and four people died after consuming Yukhoe, a raw beef dish that is similar to steak tartare.

In May, Foods Forus Co., the managing company of the Yakiniku-zakaya Ebisu restaurant chain, admitted it had not tested its raw meat for pathogens for the past two years.
