Outbreak News
An E. coli O157:NM outbreak was traced to a Boulder, Colorado, Jimmy John’s restaurant in the fall of 2008. Public health officials from Boulder County Public Health (BCPH) investigated the outbreak, an counted 19 confirmed and suspect cases of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157:NM among employees and patrons of the boulder Jimmy John’s restaurant between September 16 and October 4, 2008.
BCPH investigators obtained delivery information related to several food-items used in food preparation at the restaurant, including lettuce, tomatoes, and sprouts. A cohort study ultimately led to the conclusion that sprouts were the source of the E. coli outbreak among Jimmy John’s customers.
