Rocky mountain natural meats Bison meat E. coli outbreak
Rocky Mountain Natural Meats recalled 66,000 pounds of bison meat after health authorities linked E. coli illnesses in Colorado and New York to the product. To date, a cluster of 5 E. coli illnesses in Colorado and one in New York have been traced back to the bison meat products. A few days after the first recall, Rocky Mountain Natural Meats added another 766 pounds to the recall.
Rocky Mountain natural meats distributed the meats to retail stores nationwide, including Hannaford, King Soopers, Market Basket, Price Chopper and Whole Foods stores. Restaurant distributors in Utah and Arizona also received the product. The meats were produced between May 21, 2010 and May 27, 2010. Although the sell-by dates have passed, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is reminding consumers that they may have the product in their freezers. Any product on-hand should be discarded.
Marler Clark has filed an E. coli lawsuit on behalf of one of the victims, and is assisting others with their cases.
Symptoms of E. coli infection include severe abdominal cramps and acute diarrhea, which often turns bloody. Anyone who has consumed the product or been around ill or handled the recalled meat (or been around an ill person who has) should seek immediate medical attention.
